I found an interesting article while going through the news. From Canada’s National Post I read where three scientists from Florida State University have explained how Jesus walked on the Sea of Galilee. Seems the professor of physical oceanography, and some of his colleagues, used several statistical models and records of the Mediterranean Sea’s surface temperature to conclude that “a rare combination of water conditions and a cold snap could have caused ‘springs ice’ to form on the sea’s surface”.
They went on to say that since this ice is rather small, from some distance away it would appear that someone is walking on water. This professor did happen to admit that this was only a probability and that they don’t know for sure what really happened. Yet, after such a startling admission, he went on to say that “most likely, that ice was there during that period”.
Two of this same group, in 1992, used mathematics to conclude that if a steady northeast wind blew at 64 kilometers an hour for 10 hours, the parting of the Red Sea during the Exodus could be explained. This coming from a group who says it’s not their job to prove or disprove biblical accounts.
Isn’t it amazing how things like this are always cropping up? Consider the uproar over Dan Brown’s book, The Da’Vinci Code. How many times do you think I’ve wanted to shout to these people, IT’S A WORK OF FICTION! And yet things like the above article is presented as learned truth and you rarely hear anyone say anything about it! The statements by these people of “higher learning” seem to be above reproach. I guess we’re afraid of being labeled ignorant and narrow-minded if we attempt to counter their research.
The God that I serve is the God of creation. He spoke the Earth and the stars into existence. At the sound of His voice, light leapt into being from nothingness. I accept that the Bible is His Truth in a form that I can hold, read, and understand. Is it a stretch of my imagination to believe God parted the Red Sea and Jesus did walk on the water? With all of their “probability” and “most likely” and “could haves”, I have to ask; how much more faith do they have to have in what they believe than do I have in God’s Word? A dear Pastor friend of mine said it best, “God said it, and I believe it, which settles it.”
I hear you out there saying, “That’s very narrow-minded.” And to that I say, thank you! Why, you ask? Listen to God’s Words, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (Mat 7:13-14 KJV)
You picked up on the “narrow” up there, right? As a Christian, I have a very clear-cut path that I follow. There IS an absolute right and wrong and it applies to everyone. Now, being open-minded can be a wonderful thing but it also leaves you wide-open for seeds of doubt to be planted in your mind, too. Consider this; “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” (Jos 1:8 KJV) What was God telling Joshua here after Moses had died? In all he did, keep God’s Word foremost in his every thought and deed. This instruction applies to us, too.
When was the last time you read and meditated with your Bible? I didn’t say just read. It’s a great thing to read through the Bible in a year but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about seriously studying God’s Word, thinking about it, thinking about how it applies to you, and how you’re going to apply what you’ve learned to your life. If it’s been a while, let me urge you to get back into His Word. Don’t let these seeds of doubt start taking root in your mind.
"And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus" (Eph 2:1-6 KJV)
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” (Rom 12:2 KJV)
Until next time, I remain in Christ’s service,
Rev T
